How To Build a Business and Keep Your Feet On The Ground.
12 hours a day, six days a week.
Shamir Jiwa, the Founder and Managing Director of MAXIMeyes, was not afforded an easy ride into the energy management industry. He had to prove that he could deliver on his promises, that his inexperience was not going to hold him back, and that his ideas vision for the industry had merit.
12 hours a day, six days a week. That was what Shamir put into MAXIMeyes in the earlier years, knowing that he had to work harder than anyone to create a successful firm. Shamir reflects, “In reality, it was more than that because even when I wasn’t working, I was working. Almost every conversation with my wife, father, and friends was focused on seeking out business opportunities or trying to develop my business skills and understanding. I just didn’t have an off switch.”
A PERSONAL APPROACH TO LEADERSHIP.
Part of his commitment to the business involved taking a different approach to leadership and teamwork. “I believe in developing relationships with my team. I start the day by personally greeting and shaking the hand of every person in the office. Because we have a multicultural office, I also learned how to say good morning in the native languages of my team. To some people, it may seem like time wasted but to me, it is fundamental if you’re wanting a team that is all pulling in the same direction. These interactions keep us all connected.”
Shamir has slowed down the pace since he had children. Having started MAXIMeyes so young, he can now shift the balance so that two nights a week and the entire weekends are devoted to family time.
THERE’S NO BETTER WAY THAN TO PLAN YOUR DAY.
With less time for work, it means Shamir has to maximise his time to an even greater degree. He has always been a big proponent of organisation and tries to instil what he has learned to his team. Shamir sums up his philosophy, “If you don’t have a plan for the day, it will run away from you. I start every day creating a list of tasks into three sections: things I have to get done before lunch, things I have to get done before the end of the day, and things I’d like to get done but which can roll over to the next day if I don’t have time.”
TIME TO GIVE BACK
It must be working because as if Shamir’s plate wasn’t full enough, he is also committed to charitable endeavours, volunteering his time and entrepreneurial expertise whenever possible. A recent example is the Partnership Walk events, where over 5,000 people joined for a 10-mile walk around Regency Park and Hyde Park. £100,000 was raised with Shamir and his team managing the logistics and other important operations of the events.
“At the end of the day it’s about doing what you can with the time that you have,” Shamir said. “You have more time than you think. Use it to make a difference.”
